You are right, we can all play 8th notes...But everyone does it differently....That's the individuality.....That's what draws us listeners to listen to people like yourself and any of the other monster drummers out there.......

I was watching Peter's instructional video the other day, and he was talking about how he interprets the latin music (obviously well enough to play with Elaine Elias!). He mentioned that although he may not play a certain beat totally correct, he is still true to the feel of the music, and I think that's what it's all about. That's what really endears a drummer to me - certainly the fact that they have a master's command over their instrument, but also their interpretation of the music. Like Peter's playing with Steps Ahead (I'm thinking specifically of the tune Pools). What nuance, and feel, playing for the music! Each drummer has their own spirit that is an extension of their personality. I know that when I'm playing a tune, I'm exposing the deepest part of my heart and soul to the listeners.
I think two quotes that best sum up musicianship from a drumming perspective were made by Billy Ward on the Modern Drummer Festival 2000 DVD:
".....Music (drumming in particular) is not a track and field event..."
and
"... You've got to love the space between the notes more than you love the notes themselves..."

Good quotes from Billy Ward BTW. Oh, one thing that Plouie said about Sting not using Weckl cause he's too much in the jazz scene. Hmmm... wasn't Sting's first band after he left the police basically nothing BUT jazz musicians. Hakim, Branford, Kirkland... Oh, and doesn't he sometimes use Christian MacBride too? Sting has made it a priority to use jazzers. I just had to come in and say that... just cause i can.

Well said Matricks, can I also add that on Stings last tour, he also used UK jazz pianist Jason Rebello and has worked with other UK jazz musicians such as Guy Barker (tpt), Ben Castle (sax) and Gerrard Presencer (tpt). Probably due to the fact that all good jazz musicians worth their sort, will be able to have a very high level of reading, a thorough knowledge of harmony, will be able to improvise and is used to having to adapt to a wide range of musicial styles.
That's an interesting point about him not hiring Weckl, I've never heard of that one before. I would think though, that had Dave got the gig, he would have treated it pretty much like Vinnie did and play with taste and lay it down. Dave has done countless 'pop' work including Simon & Garfunkle and Madonna, so I would imagine that he is perfectly comfortable with simply grooving. A good example of our favourite drummers doing nothing but groove would be Dennis & Pete's playing with Steely Dan.

i think i wrote it down wrong or u misunderstood me.........i know sting uses jazzers but wot i meant was weckl is 99% involved and working in the jazz/fusion thing and wont come out. hakim and vinnie and manu are more open to all sorts of gigs..........daves priority is his band...
